Felt a little Max in the a.m
It's been a while since I've used some of my H.H skills inspired by one of my heroes, Mr. Max Roach. Felt a little sluggish, but I had so much fun. This isn't something I get to apply on gigs too often.
Here's a little sample I posted on my instagram.

I have answered quite a few questions from drummers pertaining to certain live playing posts I've created on Instagram. This one pertains to double time flow in a jazz/swing feel. I hope you enjoy it and I hope these ideas open up some musical doors for you.
Steve Hass In The Studio with Dionne Warwick and Dianne Reeves
Переглядів 105Рік тому
Here's a track I played on for the great Dionne Warwick. I used my be-bop sizes, tunes wide open. We did 2 full passes. One conservative, and one taking more chances. The producer, Todd Hunter, went with the first take which was the simpler one, leaving more room for the strings. Todd is also Dionne's musical director and pianist. Enjoy!
Subbing with Mindi Abair
Переглядів 1842 роки тому
I had the pleasure of taking the drum chair for a few shows with Mindi Abair. It's always challenging to jump into someone else's shoes. Especially a great player like Third Richardson who has been playing this gig for over 10 years. As you can see I'm referring to charts.

This is what a jazz band sounds like. I know it's been said, but wow. Impressive.

Hearing this was a profound and beautiful experience. Thanks for sharing!!
Great stuff, brother!!
Yeah Steve! Love this tune, and you killed it.
Thanks brother! Such fun times
Great
Very nicely done...
Jazz at it's finest.
Judge Reingold on guitar
I want to make a CD this performance
Discovered you on this Patti Austin track "A little bit of love", must have been live, that groove was absolutely killing it! In my view every song has its perfect drum match and that was you in that case! "Doo doo... doo doo"
thanks!!!
That cat is speaking in fucking tongues.
I have to play this for senior breakfast tomorrow and I have been rehearsing for hours wish me luck because I’m not good at bass…
I love this presentation! Wish I could have met Mrs.Staples in person. Incredible spiritual performance! Take me there Please! Thank you Hassbeat for sharing this with us here. SH AKA: Skywatcher

sorry....a question....who sing?????
Where can I find the whole album?
Wow
First of all, I’m gonna start this off with the fact that I’ve performed arrangements by this group and I’m just gonna preface that they are master class. No other vocal jazz groups even come close to their level of quality and talent. Kim is a wonderful soprano that has been in this group since the 80s. Her vocal improv was impressive and was really well done. She teaches others how to improv so I guarantee she qualified. Next up, this combo is incredible especially the pianist. He’s been with the Manhattan transfer and he’s done an incredible job. Now, just because a song is jazz doesn’t mean it has to “swing” and they were swinging when Igoe was on drums as well. Go listen to caravan or giant steps if you need proof. Swing isnt the only type of jazz. They’re mere perfection, period.
Yes
היה לי הכבוד ללוות אותם בביג בנד ישראלי בהיכל התרבות של ראשון לציון יחד עם מיטב הנגנים הישראלים הקיימים בארץ
Oh WOW. Thank you so much for uploading this one. Best wishes!
FIFTH HOUSE is my fav song by JOHN COLTRANE. I would release now as a single. This is an incredible cover of the original.
Holy Shit!!!!!
<3 this song
great touch
Good recording. You can almost not hear the people talking. LA jazz clubs are the absolute worst.
a bit tight at the moment... but Im down for the patreon thing in the near future!
All good bro! $5.00 a month when you’re ready.
So refreshing to hear a drummer SWING. Ride n' Hats...everything else is just for decor.
This is straight NASTY!!! stank face all over this thing.
So ,so love this video!!Fantabulous!!!
Hello Steve. My name is Joe Cangelosi. I love your playing. I want to ask you about the groove you play on Round Midnight on Mad 6. I love that groove. What is that called? Thanks. All the best .
Hi Joe, thank you! it's a hybrid groove with African 6/8 under tones. Songo, and just a blend of Salsa/African type grooves. That's a great question, check out my Patreon, it has tons of information with over 60 posts/lessons. And a new one every month. I can break the groove down for you there on video, I think the other students would benefit as well. Thanks again for reminding me of that recording!
@@HassbeatDrumChannel Cool!! I love that record and your drumming is amazing. I used to work at the Village Gate in the early 90s and I remember seeing you there. It could have been Visiones. But thanks again. Great to find your channel here.
@@animalosi Wow, thanks! I miss both of those places. I would sneak into the Village Gate when I was in high school.
@@HassbeatDrumChannel I miss that whole scene. The people and the musicians. The excitement of all the creativity brimming over the top back then. The city was buzzing.
@@animalosi yep, I thought it would last forever , but it didn't. I'm glad I moved when I did because that started happening in Los Angeles a few years ago. But now....pandemic. Let's see what's left after shutdowns.
beautiful development 3:09 into the Eb-
Hey Steve Don’t know if you remember me but I took classes with you when you lived in Astoria with the vibe player from Manhattan Vibes. I took some lessons from Swiss Chris as well and I remember you went to school with him. Hope you’re doing well bro
Yeaaahh hope you're well man!
@@HassbeatDrumChannel Live in VA now, lots of playing in DC. You still out in LA?
@@johnnyvalencia5734 Yep, LA..all closed down here.
I know your eyes in the morning sun I feel you touch me in the pouring rain And the moment that you wander far from me I want to feel you in my arms again And you come to me on a summer breeze Keep me warm in your love, then you softly leave And it's me you need to show How deep is your love, how deep is your love How deep is your love? I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be We belong to you and me I believe in you You know the door to my very soul You're the light in my deepest, darkest hour You're my savior when I fall And you may not think I care for you When you know down inside that I really do And it's me you need to show How deep is your love, how deep is your love How deep is your love? I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be We belong to you and me And you come to me on a summer breeze Keep me warm in your love, then you softly leave And it's me you need to show How deep is your love, how deep is your love How deep is your love? I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be We belong to you and me How deep is your love, how deep is your love I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be We belong to you and me How deep is your love, how deep is your love I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down when they all should let us be We belong to you and me
